Apparently, Efren the Hero has the hots for Angel Locsin. She seems a little uncomfortable with the whole idea; maybe “I’m CNN’s Hero of the Year” isn’t quite the winning pick-up line he thought it would be. Two words for you, buddy: Dove Unscented. You don’t have to buy it dinner, and it never says, “I just like you as a friend.”

Nung una ay binatikos ang kanyang pagkakapanalo bilang “CNN Hero of the Year.” May mga nagsasabi na ang kanyang pagkapanalo ay “rigged” o “dinaya” – kahit wala naman silang maipakitang konkretong ebidensiya at malinaw na malinaw sa sinabi sa website ng CNN na “vote as many times as you want.”
Sa kahit saang diksyunaryo n’yo pa tignan, ang ibig sabihin ng “vote as many times as you want” ay “vote as many times as you want.” Sa madaling sabi, pwedeng bumoto ilang beses mo man gustuhin.
The world is a lot wider than the four corners of your computer screens. Hindi naman siguro mananalo si Efren bilang “CNN Hero of the Year” kung maghapon at magdamag siyang nakababad sa harap ng kompyuter at naglalabas lang ng galit niya sa mundo sa blog niya.
Wake up, people. Crab mentality will not get you anywhere.
P.S. And please, don’t even dare to accuse me of being a paid hack.

As for your detractors, well, digital na ang karma ngayon…

It’s all dramatic value that made Efren of any use to the CNN marketing people. Kariton out to save the world.
If only people think on how he won, hindi siya talaga “Hero”.

I don’t think it matters how many children he helps. The point is, he has dedicated himself to helping others and perhaps for those few children, he could’ve changed the course of their lives. His commitment is admirable.
Your doctor’s office analogy doesn’t work here. There’s an infinite number of votes available, not so with the candy. CNN encouraged precisely what the Filipinos did, vote repeatedly.
I don’t think he had to publicize his feelings for Angel. She does seem embarrassed by it. Even so, let’s give him some leeway: maybe he’s still on a high from his award and from meeting her. He’s probably starstruck from the whole CNN experience and all the attention. Hindi ba, from spending his days kayod ng kayod sa trabaho niya, mainit, madumi, nakarating siya sa US, nakilala siya ng bansa, nabighani siya kay Angel, siguro lulang lula pa rin siya. And we can’t really blame him for daring to dream. I’m sure no one ever imagined he would be recognized globally for his little cariton project. So if something so seemingly impossible could become reality, why not …?
Sana huwag tayong masyadong manumbat.
I agree with you, though, that many people are easily starstruck. And the label “hero” shouldn’t be tossed around that it loses its meaning. Still, those children he helped might deem his as theirs.

It was ethical to vote once but the Pinoys practiced their flying voter talents and showed extreme desperation for a hero in this Efren thing.
He just put on a high drama show for the public titled “Kuya Ed and his Magic Kariton” na parang title ng Regal Films na pelikula na patok sa mga ugok na masa.

CNN encouraged precisely what the Filipinos did
Not quite. The idea of allowing multiple votes is to reflect how much impact he/she made to society, i.e. if he helped that much people, those same people and those that saw him/her contribute that help would be the ones to vote. Case in point is that there should have been minimal (if not none at all) campaign necessary.
The inspiration and assistance he did bring to those children is admirable. No questions about that. But how the ‘award’ was achieved is questionable. His “high” (bangag) is point-blank disappointing.
Another frustrating attitude of the “masa.” Put one Filipino (even if just 1/128th Filipino) in a lime light that would have this kind of money machine format, and they spend a lot on it. Then claim that he/she is the embodiment of all Filipinos, despite the difference between that person’s attitude/behavior/talent and that of the “celeb” or even the fact that the nationality has nothing to do with the achievement/award. *sigh*
Hopefully, the “kariton” could help address those traditions. But I’m not holding my breath for it. I may not be able to help a lot of children, but I would be damn sure not to let my children be anything like that. I prefer quality over quantity.
